A liberating photo shoot!
January 10, 2006

I believe I have heard that being naked is liberating! Is this true? Well let me tell you, in an uncharacteristic Herald-Leader photo shoot I stood at the Loudoun House on Monday with 17 very liberated subjects in front of me! It was a blast. The concept was to have actual nude people viewing the nude exhibit that opens at the Loudoun House this Friday night. We asked for volunteers and got the. 17 strong. This actually made the shoot a little more difficult. The point of being nude was so people could “tell” you were nude without actually seeing anything that shouldn’t be seen in the newspaper. Putting 17 people into the area that needed to be the photo area, (square as dictated by the front of the Weekender section), made it tough. People were so jammed together it made it tough to even tell who was nude besides the people on the outside of the frame. The first photo you see here in the blog has been darkened to keep things up to Herald-Leader standards. Sorry it is not a juicier blog. This afternoon those in charge made their decisions and it was all ok’d by the higher ups, and it was one of the photos with fewer people in it. I apologize to all those who came for the shoot who didn’t make it but it was a success either way! I did not want to give away the final piece that will be used Friday so for now you just get the manipulated photo only. Will post again on Friday and let you know some of the reactions we got!

Liberating? I wouldn’t know.. Tastefully shot? Absolutely! Incredible lighting.. Another Mark Cornelison instant classic! Well done, my friend.
What a great story! A close friend of mine was there and he has relayed to me his thoughts and how liberating it was. We are both models for art classes and groups and it so good to see and read a positive article about our chosen part-time work. I live in Kansas and have been modeling for over 4 years and have learned about art through my work.
Liberating: absolutely. Tastefully done: positively. Fun: most defiantly. That’s my take on the photo shoot at the Loudoun House Monday. I had the privilege to be in it and I have to say it was great. Very professionally done and a very comfortable atmosphere. The photo looks great and cant wait to see the final picture. I know some of us will be disappointed if we are not in it but it was still worth it and loads of fun doing it. Thanks to the Herald-Leader for putting it on. Well done.
Creative photographic art in the form of the nude human. I liked it! and with the manipulation of light and bleeping out a few body parts, you made it work.
An impressive presentation. An integration of reflection - “would I, could I”? I actually felt jealousy toward the models. The naked body is a beautiful thing. Nice capture of the tatoo by the way. On purpose?
Hey Stella,
Thanks a lot for the note! I am trying to figure out how to reply on the “blog” but in the meantime wanted to write you myself and just say thanks.
I should add though that the photo in the paper has no digital manipulation at all. Any shadows are just that and trust me when I say I put the models through two hours of shooting so I could get it right. I told them they had to be a little patient with me and they were all great. I expected some to leave for other commitments but no one left at all. It was truly a team effort.
As for the tattoo, It was not on purpose to put it front and center. That is just the way the bodies fell into position and worked. I have had a lot of people ask me what the tattoo is and it is actually a “Libra” sign. I asked the model so I could answer everyone’s questions. Some people may have removed the tattoo, but like I said, no manipulation here so the tattoo
Stays!
Thanks again,
Mark Cornelison
