The Prepared Photojournalist

Covering a compost fire is a good argument for why photographers should always carry an extra pair of mud boots in their car at all times. I broke that rule the day I took this picture and paid for it in the time I spent cleaning good shoes.

The prepared photojournalist should always carry:
Mud boots
Rain gear
A good book
Hat, gloves, long underwear, chemical hand warmers, etc. (In cold weather)
Flashlight
Extra cash
Snacks
Water

This is, of course, in addition to the ton of camera and computer gear I have to carry. The book is for those hurry-up-and-wait situations, the snacks and extra cash are for when I’m called out of town unexpectedly with no time to eat or stop at the bank and the rest is obvious.

I know I’m forgetting things. I’ll remember when it’s too late to do anything about it.
