A boy named Kerwin

December 14, 2008

Kentucky parents have adopted more than 3,000 foreign children in the last decade. Each one of those adoptions had its perils and hopes, its bureaucratic bumbles and victories. This is the story of just one of those quests, for a special boy with special needs, a boy who almost died — a boy named Kerwin. (Photos by Andy Olsen)

I visited North West Haiti Christian Mission in 2002 and can honestly say my life has never been the same since the moment I entered that country. Thank you to Andy and Erika Olsen, the Haakes’, and the missionaries at NWHCM. This is a story that needs to be heard.

Excellent work, Andy. Thanks for helping us see what kind of reach we can have beyond our own, small community - both as photographers and humanitarians.

All these children here in USA that need help and you put one on a credit card, you could got a 52inch flat screen from Circuit City,,,,,,,if you file bankruptcy will they come back and take it were it belongs, with its real mommy and daddy,,, you people make me gag. In Ky a bottle of pills would have got you one the could walk and hear,,, beside’s this story has lies,,, first he couldn’t walk,, now he’s a wide reciever at UK.

Excellent job on this story. Even though I have been around this family as well as Kerwin personally, the way you put this story together allows others to see how dedicated and loving a couple can be to care for a special needs child such as Kerwin. They trully are great people and went through more than any of us can image to bring home the son that they love and now call thier own.
And to Larry who posted earlier, yes the Ky doctors can perform miracles and I comend them for that as well as I am sure Mike and Becky do as well.

      Andy,
Truly moving words and images in both print and electronic media. I know the hours of physical and emotional investment you have made with this family and organization have rewarded you and your subjects many times over.
Thank you for sharing your passion. All the best for your current and future endeavors.
      Lisa

Isn’t it amazing what can be done with open hearts, persistence, and correctly ordered priorities? Thank you to Andy Olsen for bringing this wonderful story to us and to Rebecca and Mike Haake for sharing their trials and triumphs. Kerwin has touched my heart and will be in my prayers. Merry Christmas Haakes. May you have a truly joyful 2009!

Thank you for sharing your story. Kerwin is beautiful. We are currently waiting for our son to come home from Barbara’s.

    Got something to say?
