Friday started slowly with a quiet morning on the backside. Training hours were limited and Derby horses didn’t do too much on the day before the Kentucky Derby. My favorite photo of the week so far, though, was from this morning. Trainer Dan Hendricks would presumably have scores of fantastic photos of his Derby entry, Brother Derek. And if he didn’t, you think he’d know where to get them. Instead, he opted to shoot his own photo with his cell phone this morning, with the Churchill Spires as a backdrop. I figured at best I would get a photo of the horse walking past him – instead I got the photo above.

Another favorite from the day is this hat photo taken at the races before the Oaks. Check heraldleaderphoto.com for an audio slideshow of the day at the Oaks.
