The 65th annual Pictures of the Year International competition announced Monday that Herald-Leader staff photographer David Stephenson won First Place for Best Multimedia, with his entry A New Dawn.

The multi-part audio slide show follows the struggle of Dawn Smith through Fayette County’s Drug Court over nearly a four year period. The story was published in the Herald-Leader in a six part series last October. The multimedia project ran on Kentucky.com at the same time the story was published in the paper.

The project can be seen at: www.heraldleaderphoto.com/dawn

Stephenson’s entry was one of 125 projects entered in the multimedia category. An entry by the Los Angeles Times was second and one by the Toronto Globe & Mail was third.

Tim Broekema and James Kenney of Western Kentucky University were awarded an Award of Excellence for their piece on The Women of Evangel from Nigeria.

    David,
Congratulations on your award. You have restored my faith in the power of photojournalism. It is obvious that you poured your heart and soul into this story . It was was painful to watch Dawn self destruct and know the damage she has inflicted on her children and herself.

Addiction shows no mercy. I hope that one day she able to be happy , joyous and free.
