Adam Bender, 8, is one of several kids who plays catcher in Southeastern’s rookie league at Veterans Park. What makes Adam stand out is that he plays one of the toughest positions on the field with only one leg. Because of cancer, he had his left leg amputated when he was one. Adam doesn’t use a prosthesis, and only uses crutches when he reaches base for the Astros. Charles Bertram | Staff READ THE STORY
UPDATE: Since the story of 8-year old cancer survivor Adam Bender was published in the Lexington Herald-Leader, and on www.kentucky.com, on June 1, 2008, the one-legged catcher has been invited to throw out first pitches at a Chicago White Sox game, a Cincinnati Reds game, a Houston Astros game, and has been invited to a Garth Brooks benefit in Las Vegas. He is also being profiled for a story that will air on ESPN. On Sunday June 6, 2008, Adam threw out the ceremonial first pitch to Adam Dunn of the Reds.

I think Adam Bender should get a prosthesis leg, He is a wonderful player, I am concerned he will develop arthritis and other bone problems, putting so much weight on one leg, You can tell he is real tired at the end of the game, Please some Corporation out there, Help this family, they probably can,t afford a Prosthesis for their child, And are to proud to ask, They have a new Prosthesis leg for Athletes that is real lite,Runners wear them, They cost around $30,000. I would like to see him get on the TV program Dr Ozze, Or the Doctors,
great idea!
That is amazing!
Carol, if you’d read the article, you would have seen this paragraph, “Adam tried using a prosthesis but didn’t like it because he felt it slowed him down. He is adamant about not using a wheelchair.”
I think the decision should be his, don’t you agree?
hey dont wury about any thing god is with u
WOW…UN EJEMPLO A SEGUIR ESTE PEQUEÑO ESTA BENDECIDO..OJALA LE PUDIERAN PONER UNA PROTESIS COMO AL ATLETA CORREDOR NO RECUERDO SU NOMBRE…

This is a very touching story. And yes, i do think he should get a prosthetic leg. I would fund it myself if not for money issues of my own. Please, some caring corporation out there, fund this boy. he deserves a future.
A prosthesis is FREE at a SHRINE HOSPITAL. Get that boy to a Shriner that you know.

Adam has a “leg up” on anyone lacking courage and determination.
