After 18 years, Carla and David Garey gave up raising tobacco in 2004 and turned their full time attention to raising vegetables and meat to sell at Lexington Farmers Market. Today on their 60 acre farm in Bourbon County, the Garey family raise 190 different kinds of vegetables and a flock of 450 chickens and turkeys. Photos by Charles Bertram

I am glad to see that the Garey family has changed their source of income. I know that must have taken a large effort on there part. I work in a hospital, and to see how many people suffer from illnesses that have come from their smoking habit. I know that there are other reasons for the increase in health insurance, cost but this is a large part. (Smoking). I am soon to be 61, and threw the grace of God he has guided me in making good choices for myself. I am amazed at for the amount of info there is on smoking let alone the cost that people still do it. The residual from it alone. I personnally think it is a form of child abuse. It is amazing to see the illness that children receive from parents that smoke. Breathing problems alone would scare me. Then you go out into the poblic, and see a mother smoking while they are even pregnant. I thing in the hospital setting alone when it comes to the emplyees they are the worst. They see what happens, but for some reason do not care. They make sure thay get their smoke brake. I am not sure what is the answer, but I am glad to see that one family, in a tabacco state is making a change. Thanks
