A History of the Governor’s Cup

There was a time when all we could do was talk about what would happen if Kentucky and Louisville ever met on the football field. Then, on June 25, 1993, a rivalry replaced an argument when the state’s two major universities jointly announced they at last would play each other. That first modern-day meeting, dubbed “Game One,” took place one year later and, suddenly, two teams that for 70 years saw no reason to come together, had 59,162 of them filling Commonwealth Stadium. Fifteen years after Game One we no longer number the games (Game 16, anyone?), but we have the type of full-blown rivalry both schools envisioned the day athletic directors Bill Olsen and C.M. Newton, and coaches Bill Curry and Howard Schnellenberger stood side-by-side to announce the series. There is history and hype. There is tradition and a trophy. There are fans on the field and partying in the streets. Louisville has won nine; Kentucky has won six. Louisville has built a new stadium it’s now expanding; Kentucky is planning a second upgrade. Both programs are bowl-game regulars. And neither team’s fans like each other much. Newton’s statement upon the creation of the Governor’s Cup game in 1993 now looks prescient: “I think this will be mutually beneficial. But I think the real winners will be the football fans in the state of Kentucky.”
